Jane Fremantle is an artist exploring how materials resonate together. She often works with stone, exploring its texture, translucency, the roughness of natural stone and its appearance when smoothed. She investigates its ability to hold tool marks and gestures that reveal the presence of the artist.
Jane is a recent MFA Graduate from West Dean College. She is based at the Courtyard Studios, Chilgrove, just north of Chichester.
In preparation for this exhibition, Jane has been thinking about the strong material presence of the collections at the Haslemere Educational Museum. She has created a trio of sculpture: ‘Animal, Vegetable, Mineral’, which references the idea of classification of materials. In this work Jane explores how one type of stone can be worked to create different visual and tactile effects.
